About me
I obtained Master’s and PhD qualifications from Loughborough University in the 1990s and then spent seventeen years in academic roles at the University of Northumbria and Loughborough University.
I have worked in the New Zealand tertiary sector since emigrating from the United Kingdom in 2013. My first role in 2014 was in NZQA’s QAD division, and primarily involved dealing with degree applications from polytechnics and private training establishments. I then moved on in 2017 to work as an Academic Manager at a private training establishment in Wellington.
I joined Careerforce in 2019 and spent two years there maintaining and reviewing unit standards; at this time I also began development of micro-credentials. As part of the ROVE reforms, my role at Careerforce transitioned along with standard-setting responsibilities to Toitū te Waiora workforce development council. I joined them as Manager of the Qualification Development team in October 2021.
My primary task was setting up a Qualification Development team virtually from scratch, and over time developing new qualifications, skill standards, and micro-credentials. I acted as interim General Manager of the qualification and moderation teams for a period in 2023-24, and then moved into a permanent position as Principal Advisor (Qualifications) in May 2024. My role was made redundant in the VET reform process along with disestablishment of Toitū te Waiora on 31 December 2025.
Outside work I am a devoted supporter of Oxford United football club and enjoy Indian food, astrophotography, and – erm – a slight obsession with model railways (OO scale, British, 1970s).
